Host Neil Cavuto, who has worked for Fox News for 28 years, will reportedly announce his departure after his show “Your World” on Thursday afternoon.
The anchor’s contract expires at the end of the month; therefore, Thursday will be his last day on the air.
“Cavuto is one of the few remaining on-air talent still with the network after joining at its inception in the late 1990s. A beloved presence at Fox, his exit is not the consequence of any bad blood, but rather an increasingly common industry reality: Cavuto was offered a new contract, which he declined to accept his new deal. Fox wanted him to stay on board, but a source explained that he ultimately decided to leave,” Mediaite reported.
“The cable news industry has seen a season of belt-tightening that has resulted in similar departures of star journalists who have opted to quit their networks instead of taking a smaller salary. While Fox News is on much better footing than its competitors — thanks to continued ratings dominance and a successful multi-platform strategy — even Rupert Murdoch’s news behemoth is not immune to the new realities of the business,” the outlet added.
“Over the past few years, Cavuto has become an iconoclast on Fox’s dayside programming, a rare voice willing to call out President-elect Donald Trump and face his wrath in return. Outside of politics, Cavuto has been open about his decades-long battle with multiple sclerosis and became a vocal critic of Covid vaccine denialism after a second bout of the virus nearly took his life,” the outlet added.
According to the source who spoke with Mediaite, Cavuto’s leaving has nothing to do with Trump, despite their disagreements. His show probably would have been canceled years ago, at least before the election, if his sporadic criticism of Trump had been a problem.
As a news and business reporter for Fox, Cavuto’s reputation allowed him to anchor 12 hours of programming every week. Cavuto: Coast to Coast on Fox Business and Your World and Cavuto Live on Fox News were among them.
According to a source, Fox News and Fox Business will reveal new programs in the upcoming year. Until a new show premieres, Your World will be hosted by a changing group of anchors. Until new content premieres, Fox Business’s Coast to Coast will be rebranded as FOX Business Live, with alternating hosts.
“Neil Cavuto’s illustrious career has been a master class in journalism, and we’re extremely proud of his incredible 28-year run with FOX News Media,” Fox News said in a statement to Mediaite.
“His programs have defined business news and set the standard for the entire industry. We wish him a heartfelt farewell and all the best on his next chapter,” Fox News added.
Then-candidate Donald Trump furiously attacked Cavuto in September after the anchor criticized Trump’s debate performance against Vice President Kamala Harris.
“He had six prior presidential debates to this one,” Cavuto said on Fox Business Network while talking to Bob Cusack, editor-in-chief of The Hill. “But this one, at least in my liking—and you’re the expert here—he decisively lost it. He might have made some very good presentations on where the economy was, but it was all over the map.”
“This was that first occasion where it wasn’t just a close call,” Cavuto continued on his Fox Business show, Cavuto: Coast to Coast. “It was a lopsided one.”
