A mother recently found herself defending her actions as she declared, “I didn’t do anything wrong,” following the viral video of her warmly embracing her son, which garnered mixed reactions online.
We’ve all experienced those moments when we’ve made our parents proud—whether it’s excelling in a sports competition or earning good grades in school—and their enthusiasm knows no bounds.
They might burst into joyful exclamations, offer a congratulatory handshake, or embrace us tightly.
However, a video capturing a parent’s exuberance after her son’s soccer match has sparked a debate on the internet, and she felt compelled to address it.
Amber Wright, like any other proud parent, took to Instagram to share an interaction she had with her 16-year-old son, Brixton, following his football game in Utah.
She accompanied the post with the caption: “When I walked up to hug my baby boy after his game, he immediately picked me up and just held me… in this moment, time stood completely still.”
Clearly overjoyed by the results, the video captures a heartwarming moment where the mother and son share an exuberant hug – he lifts her up, and she clings to him with both arms and legs.
This is the aspect that has sparked controversy.
In response to the post, an individual commented: “It would’ve been cute if it was his girlfriend, but not a mother.”
“That guy’s future wife doesn’t stand a chance,” writes someone else.
A third penns: “Nothing wrong with the hug but the feet should’ve never left the ground mama.”
Nevertheless, there are those who have rallied to support Wright’s actions, with one person remarking: “We single mamas and our sons have a bond others can’t understand.”
Someone else shares: “Beautiful moment with your son, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”
Another adds: “[I] thought it was super tender. She is proud of her baby boy.”
“That’s a proud mama. Great job raising a good, loving son,” comments a user.
In a previously removed Instagram post, Wright responded to her critics by asserting that she had done ‘nothing wrong’.
“If you’re one of the people that happens to see something immoral or sexual or wrong with it then I’m just going to say that’s on you,” she says.
“I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“We live in a society where we’re trying to teach our kids not to bully and we’re preaching that we all should love one another […] it just seems very hypocritical.”
She also conveyed to her audience that she has no intentions of altering her interactions with her son.
During an interview with Today, Wright addressed and defended her actions by stating: “I was so proud. I was a proud mom hugging her kid.”
“I never expected it to turn into something where people are like, ‘You’re s**ually abusing him! You’
The single mother elaborates that she hails from a close-knit family that has always been fond of hugging one another.
Wright also provides context, mentioning that her son may have held onto her “a bit longer” than usual after the game, as it marked the first time he wore a jersey bearing his late father’s date of passing, April 4.
“He was feeling emotional, and I think as his mom, I’m his safe space,” she concludes.
