Yesterday, House Democrats introduced legislation that would allow Congress to assess President Donald Trump’s fitness for office and potentially move to remove him under the 25th Amendment.

The bill, which has 50 Democratic co-sponsors, would assess Trump’s fitness for office and allow the emergency 25th Amendment to be invoked if he is deemed medically incapable of being in office.

If passed, the bill would create a 17-member commission made up of high-ranking former officials appointed by leaders of both parties.

It could then pursue a series of assessments, including a medical examination of the president to determine if he is “mentally or physically unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office.”

Why has the bill been introduced this week?

The bill’s introduction comes as Trump’s ability to run the country has been doubted following his violent comments about the war in Iran, insulting Pope Leo XIV and an image he shared apparently depicting him as Jesus.

Last week, the president threatened Iran that if they did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again”.

Following the genocidal comment, almost 100 Democrats called for Trump to be removed using the 25th Amendment.

Then on Sunday, April 12, Trump shared an AI-generated image that appeared to depict him as Jesus, infuriating even his most loyal supporters and the head of the Catholic church.

Jamie Raskin, the Democratic representative who introduced the bill, has urged the White House physician to perform a comprehensive cognitive assessment of Trump, alleging that he “has been exhibiting signs consistent with dementia and cognitive decline.”

The House Committee on the Judiciary, a committee of the U.S. House of Representatives responsible for overseeing federal law enforcement, yesterday released a statement from Raskin, “Amid Concerns Over Trump’s Escalating Erratic Conduct”.

In the statement, he said: “Public trust in Donald Trump’s ability to meet the duties of his office has dropped to unprecedented lows as he threatens to destroy entire civilizations, unleashes chaos in the Middle East while violating Congressional war powers, aggressively insults the Pope of the Catholic Church and sends out artistic renderings online likening himself to Jesus Christ.

“We are at a dangerous precipice, and it is now a matter of national security for Congress to fulfill its responsibilities under the 25th Amendment to protect the American people from an increasingly volatile and unstable situation.”

Will the bill actually invoke the 25th Amendment?

However, there is little chance that the legislation will make any impact on the Trump administration, as the 25th Amendment would need the vice president’s approval, and it is highly unlikely that Vice President JD Vance will vote to boot his boss out of office.

Also, the Democratic bill is unlikely to make it past the first stage of processing, being passed by the Republican controlled Congress.
