A video captured rough waves shortly before a boat capsized on the lake, triggering a major search and rescue operation over the weekend.

Six people are dead and two remain missing after a 27-foot gold Chris-Craft capsized near D.L. Bliss State Park on Lake Tahoe around 3 p.m. Saturday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard crew from Station Lake Tahoe responded alongside California State Parks and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office after receiving reports of 10 individuals in the water. The vessel reportedly capsized due to large swells amid strong wind conditions.

Weather conditions at the time included wind speeds of up to 30 knots and waves between six and eight feet. A video taken by the boat’s captain, obtained by South Tahoe Now, captured rapidly building waves moments before the incident.

Two people were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital. A coordinated search effort for the two missing passengers began early Sunday, involving El Dorado County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, K9 units, a dive team, the North Tahoe Fire Protection District, and Coast Guard aerial support using a fixed-wing aircraft.

By Sunday afternoon, the Coast Guard suspended its search for the two missing individuals.
