On January 20, 2025, Donald Trump became the 47th president of the United States, making history as the oldest president ever elected at 78.
Given his age – now 79 – questions have surfaced about what would happen if he were to die in office.
The US Constitution, reinforced by the 25th Amendment, clearly states that if a president passes away, resigns, or is removed from office, the vice president assumes the presidency.
In this case, Vice President JD Vance would automatically take on the full powers and duties of the role.
What Would Happen When Vance Is Sworn In?
Once sworn in, Vance would have the power to keep or replace cabinet members. He will also need to nominate a replacement vice president, who must be confirmed by a majority vote in both the House and Senate.
If this were to take place before his 42nd birthday, he would become the youngest person to become president, so through succession, surpassing Theodore Roosevelt, who was 42 when he took office following the assassination of William McKinley in 1901.
However, he would not be the youngest person ever elected president, as that still belongs to John F. Kennedy, who was 43 when he won the presidency in 1960.
Trump’s Health Concerns
Trump’s health has been a subject of discussion.
He recently told The Wall Street Journal that he had a CT scan to rule out heart issues and denied any cognitive decline, despite taking higher doses of aspirin for 25 years, which he says helps prevent blood clots.
However, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones raised concerns in a recent episode of his show. He suggested the 79-year-old’s brain “is not doing too hot,” and also pointed to the swelling around Trump’s ankles, which he suggested could be a sign of heart failure.
“He’s gone. And that’s it,” Jones said. “And all the people rallied around him, you can see, Hegseth’s freaked out… You can see, the press secretary’s freaked out.
“They’re being loyal… They think it’s a lesser of two evils. And I, okay, but I just…Trump needs intervention. He needs to take some time off,” he added.
The White House spokesperson Davis Ingle dismissed these claims in a statement, which read: “This is a complete bulls**t story that’s being desperately told to boost podcast views,” per The Independent.
“The truth is that President Trump is the sharpest and most accessible President in American history who is working nonstop to solve problems and deliver on his promises, and he remains in excellent health,” he added.
