The September 10 murder of Charlie Kirk was a gunshot heard around the world, with the controversial political commentator being hit in the neck by a single bullet while speaking at Utah Valley University.
Kirk visited the campus as part of his American Comeback Tour and was gunned down while discussing gun violence with a left-leaning student who studied there. A multiagency manhunt gripped the media for the next 33 hours, and amid botched arrests and wrongful accusations, it’s said that Tyler Robinson’s own father eventually turned him in.
There have since been leaked group chats that appeared to contain a ‘confession’ from Robinson, as well as numerous questions about ‘why’ he did it and whether he had any help.

Appearing virtually for his first court appearance on September 16, Robinson was seen wearing an anti-suicide vest from Utah County Jail. The Associated Press confirmed that Robinson had no attorney listed on the Utah online court docket. This remained the case after preliminary charges were brought against the alleged shooter.
Robinson uttered only three words during the hearing, and when Judge Tony Graf asked Robinson to state his name, the reportedly emotionless 22-year-old simply said: “Tyler James Robinson.”
Graf thanked Robinson for being there and then said he’d ‘remain in custody without bail.’ This was just the first part of what’s sure to be an extensive trial. Robinson now faces seven charges, including a felony discharge of a firearm, two counts of obstruction of justice that include moving a firearm and disposing of clothing. There are two further counts of witness tampering from supposedly telling his roommate to ‘delete messages’ and telling them to ‘stay quiet’. The final count is for committing a violent crime when children are present.

Speaking in a press conference, Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray reiterated that prosecutors are pushing for the death penalty. He also went on to speculate about a potential motive, saying: “When asked why he did it, Robinson explained, ‘There’s too much evil and the guy [Kirk] spreads too much hate’.”
It’s also alleged that the Republican-raised Robinson admitted to his roommate that he had “the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.”
Gray concluded by saying that there are ‘aggravated factors’ to consider, such as the potential targeting of Kirk over his political standpoint and the fact that the shooting took place in front of children.
A sentencing and parole board will take these into account as the trial progresses, while Judge Graf confirmed Robinson will be given a court-appointed attorney ahead of his next hearing on September 29.
