Donald Trump hit with extreme backlash after posting ‘blasphemous’ meme about the Pope

A week after Pope Francis was laid to rest, Donald Trump took to social media to share an ‘extremely disrespectful’ image.

The head of the Catholic church passed away on April 21 at the age of 88-years-old, with hundreds of thousands flocking to St Peter’s Square in Vatican City to pay their respects to the late religious leader on April 26.

Among them was US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania, alongside other world leaders.

It didn’t take long for Trump to be called out online, not only for what he was wearing and comments he made before, but also for ‘disrespecting’ protocol.

Trump then revealed who he’d want to be the next pope after Francis and well, if you’ve ever questioned how you know when a joke’s being taken too far, the 78-year-old has just demonstrated it perfectly – taking to Instagram to share a picture which has seen him slammed as ‘a new low’.

Earlier today (May 3), Trump took to his Instagram to share an AI-generated image of himself.

The picture shows Trump in a cream pope outfit, a mitre hat and a cross dangling around his neck.

He’s sat on a gold ornate chair and is holding one finger up in the air.

And it’s not taken long for people to weigh in.

One Instagram user said: “Cannot believe this is real. I don’t expect any level of respect from Trump, but this is a new low.”

“Not funny. Not ‘rage bait’. As the president of the United States of America, you’d expect some decorum. The American people deserve better. Not some AI-generated slop of Trump masquerading as Pope. Trump isn’t even Catholic. This is extremely disrespectful,” another added.

A third wrote: “Trump, have you lost our mind? You’re doing a good job as president but this post is down right wrong. Not funny & kind of blasphemous. You’re better than that.”

It follows Trump revealing who he’d like the next pope to be following Francis.

When asked by reporters on the lawn of the White House who he wishes to be the next pope, Trump joked: “I’d like to be pope – that’d be my number one choice.”

Taking to Twitter, one user wrote: “A convicted pope.”

“Let me guess, ‘I’d be a better pope than any past pope,'” another added.

A third joked: “If he becomes pope, then perhaps there will be historic changes in the religious system.”

A fourth resolved: “Why yes. Clearly Trump has a clear grasp on Catholicism. Question? If he doesn’t get two thirds vote from the College of Cardinals, will Trump accuse the papacy of cheating?”
