One of the many problems with privatized healthcare is that it’s beholden to the economy in a way that public healthcare never is. Now, as the US economy continues to ride into a recession, another spate of hospital closures has come, leaving many medical staff without jobs.
Prospect Medical Holdings filed for bankruptcy back in January and has failed to find a buyer. As a result, Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital in Pennsylvania will be forced to close their doors. The healthcare giant was seeking a buyer since its bankruptcy filing, but nobody stepped forward to make the purchase.
The failure of the healthcare giant was a result of their “Greed and mismanagement,” according to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Their inability to see past the bottoms of their own pockets has denied areas with healthcare. The many patients in the hospitals will also have to be moved, putting lives at risk.
More Than 2000 People Set To Lose Jobs In Hospital Closures
Since the medical giants’ filing for bankruptcy, medical staff in the hospitals have been left wondering about their future. Those who hadn’t managed to abandon ship already received an email on Monday. It outlines the imminent termination of their jobs. Around 2,600 people have been left unemployed by the hospital’s closures.
Before the final closure, several patients were already being moved from the doomed hospitals. However, with the confirmation of closure, now all patients will have to be taken elsewhere.
Speaking about the hospital closures, Pennsylvania state senator Tim Kearney expressed his sadness. “It is a devastating and disgraceful blow to our communities, our health care workers, and every patient who has ever relied on our local hospital system.”
Hospitals being run by companies that have no interest in human life, and instead focus on profit, are always doomed to fail. Health and life are not something that should be used for personal gain. The rising number of hospital closures due to greed and abuse of human rights is the inevitable outcome of the broken and predatory practice that has been allowed to exist in the US for so long.
